FAQs
If the canvas does not come with a stitch guide, we can do our best to assist with where to place what color. To receive the best guidance on where to place your threads, we suggest you send us a photo of both the threads you received and the canvas. This will enable us to provide you with accurate advice tailored to your specific needlepoint project.
General Needlepoint Questions
The mesh count is the number of holes in a linear inch. 18-mesh allows for more detail, while 13-mesh can be easier to see.
For 18 mesh canvas, we recommend size 22 needles. However, some people prefer size 24 needles. For 13/14 mesh we use size 20 needles and for size 10/12 mesh we use size 18 needles. In general, your needle should slide through the canvas mesh easily without pushing aside the canvas threads.
A good beginner project is one that is not too large in size and whose design does not have too many colors. If you are not sure where to start the best bet would be to grab a kit that includes the painted canvas, threads and a needle. This will take away the guesswork. Click here to shop our level one kits and classes.
○ A stitch guide is created when a stitcher completes a canvas and carefully notes what stitch and threads were used. This way the canvas can be re-created by you the same beautiful way. If you purchase a canvas with a stitch guide, you can choose to follow it, or use your own stitches and threads.
○ Unless stated in the description, most of our canvases do not come with stitch guides. You can shop for canvases with stitch guides here.
○ Stitch printed designs will have each canvas intersection painted with one color, so you will clearly see what color thread to use.
○ Hand Painted designs will have the canvas painted more like a painting, with curves and gradients. There will often be intersections with two colors, so you will need to choose which color will look better to follow the design.
Kitting & Threads
Kitting is when threads are chosen for a canvas. When you pick out a canvas, you must also indicate what types of threads, if any, you would like it to come with. We pull threads for each canvas based on your selection.
○ If the listing does not specify threads, then they are not included.
○ Below the “Add to Cart” button is a drop-down menu that says “Choose Your Threads.” You’ll have 4 options - Pick our Favorites, cotton threads, wool/wool blend threads, and silk/silk blend threads. Select your thread choice prior to hitting the “Add to Cart” button, and threads will be added to your order along with the canvas.
○ If you choose Bradley SIlk, Bradley Silk is a premium thread option designed specifically for needlepoint. Made from high-quality Grade A silk, it has a soft, smooth feel and beautiful natural sheen that gives your finished piece a polished look. Bradley Silk is available in 351 colors across three thread types designed for different canvas meshes: 8-ply, single strand for 13 count, and single strand for 18 count. When you select Bradley Silk for your canvas, we’ll choose the appropriate thread type for the mesh and carefully match colors to your canvas. Because the same color range is available across all three thread types, Bradley Silk makes it easy to achieve consistent, beautiful color while enjoying the smooth stitching experience of silk.
If you choose Cotton, we will kit your piece with DMC Floss, DMC 5, DMC 3, Threadworx Overdyed Cotton or a combination of these.
If you choose Pick Our Favorites, we will kit your piece with any fiber in the store, which for the team at Needlepoint.com is like being handed the keys to the candy store. Fuzzy fibers, velvets, silks, sparkles - you name it. We go out of our way to include the best thread we can so you can achieve the most beautiful result. We often add thread notes with ideas for where to place the threads or how to use them, and, because we know "things" about each of the fibers (e.g.some threads are more fun in small doses - looking at you, Frosty Rays) we include just the right amount of each.
Unfortunately, we cannot kit a canvas from just a photo; we need to have the canvas in hand to be accurate. Most web photos are too small to make out all the details and colors. Also, shades vary greatly from screen to screen, resulting in kitting that is not true to the canvas colors. You will need to send your canvas in for kitting.
This depends on the brand of yarn you are using and mesh count of the canvas you are working with. Check out our Thread Tips for more guidance.
Please contact our customer support team and they will be happy to help with getting you more thread if you've purchased the threads from us. Needlepoint.Com does not keep a record of the threads pulled to kit your canvas. Please make it a habit to keep your thread tags as a reference should you need additional thread.
Bradley Silk
Bradley Threads searched the globe for exceptional silk and partnered with a highly respected, 150-year-old silk textile manufacturer north of Nanjing, China, to spin and dye the exact threads needlepoint stitchers need.
We are proud to introduce three new 100% silk threads:
13 Count Silk, designed for 13-count canvas
18 Count Silk, designed for 18-count canvas
8-Ply Pliable Silk, a versatile thread that can be separated to suit a variety of projects - use all eight ply on 13-count canvas, four ply on 18-count canvas, or two to four ply on cross-stitch fabric
Thoughtfully developed for beautiful coverage and a luxurious finish, these silks are made for needlepoint stitchers everywhere.
Our focus has always been simple: to create needlepoint products that bring as much joy as possible to the stitchers who use them.
As Needlepoint.Com and its brands - Needlepoint To Go, Kirk & Bradley, and Two Sisters Needlepoint - developed new projects, we saw a need for silk threads created specifically for those designs. We needed precise thread sizes, thoughtfully selected colours, and reliable coverage across different canvas counts.
Bradley Silk was developed to meet those needs and help ensure that every stitcher enjoys both the creative process and the finished project.
Thread preference is personal, and every stitcher has a favorite. We encourage you to try Bradley Silk and tell us what you love or what you would like to see improved.
Working closely with our expert spinning and dyeing partners, we developed this family of threads for stitchers, by stitchers, using the highest-quality Grade A silk available. Each thread is designed to provide beautiful coverage and an enjoyable stitching experience on its intended Zweigart canvas size.
We are delighted with the results and excited to hear what you think.
Our threads are produced in a modern eco-friendly facility using the most advanced dyeing technology. These threads have been designed to hold their color exceptionally well. While any material left in bright sunlight or harsh interior lighting might experience some fading, we know our customers are very careful with their stitching and will enjoy many decades of colorful pleasure from their projects stitched with Bradley Silk.
Bradley Silk 13 is designed for 13-count Zweigart needlepoint canvas. It passes smoothly through the larger canvas holes while providing beautiful coverage of both the canvas and painted design.
Bradley Silk 18 offers the same smooth stitching experience and excellent coverage on 18-count Zweigart needlepoint canvas.
Bradley Silk 8-Ply provides greater flexibility and a different texture. Use all eight plies on 13-count canvas, four plies on 18-count canvas, or fewer plies on cross-stitch and embroidery fabrics. Because you can separate and use only the number of plies your project requires, it is also an economical and versatile choice.
A laying tool can be used to flatten the fibers of our pliable silk thread to give a remarkably smooth and polished look to any element of your design you think would benefit from that effect. We encourage you to learn more about laying tools as a fun and useful way to achieve unique effects in your stitching.
Every effort is made to ensure consistency from dye lot to dye lot, but natural variations can occur. Bradley Threads does give you a way to match dye lots if exact color matching is important to your project. You can see the dye lot number as the number in parentheses under the color number on each thread label. If you think this might be important to your project, make sure you keep the label attached to the skein of thread.
Color 001 is our brightest, truest white. Color 002 is a slightly softer, natural off-white, while color 003 is a warm cream.
Bradley Silk 13 and Bradley Silk 18 are available in both 10-yard and 30-yard skeins. The 10-yard skein is comparable in length to a typical card of thread, perfect for small areas of color, while the 30-yard skein is ideal for larger projects or frequently used colors.
Bradley Silk 8-Ply is available in 15-yard skeins.
To quickly identify thread type, Bradley Silk for 13 count has the green tag, 18 count has the blue tag, and the 8-ply has the orange tag.
For the best stitching experience, we recommend stitching with 18-inch strands.

Blocking is the process of making your distorted piece perfectly straight again. As a canvas gets stitched, the canvas can shift and warp, causing the design to look askew. Using stretcher bars help prevent distortion as you’re stitching. If your canvas needs to be blocked before finishing, this service can be provided for an additional fee.
If you provided your email you will receive confirmation as soon as your package arrives. We always recommend getting tracking on your projects, along with insurance on the package. You can always email [email protected] to check to see if it has arrived.
A signature is always recommended. Once your piece leaves our shop, it is out of our hands and in the hands of the carrier. The signature provides you with an extra layer of security that your piece is delivered to you. That being said, if you want to opt out of the signature, you may do so. It is not recommended and if something happens to your piece, it is out of our control.
Not necessarily. All of our finishers work in their own order, mostly in order of holidays. We are always happy to hold pieces as they come in, to help you save on shipping.
